Testing the Spirit
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” — 1 John 4:1
If you’ve recently come to Christ, you may begin to notice something new—
your thoughts, desires, and even spiritual experiences may feel more intense or more significant than before.
This is not something to fear.
It is something to learn to discern.
God does not want you confused or misled—
He wants you grounded, aware, and rooted in truth.
A Simple Truth to Start With
Not every thought you have is from God.
And not every spiritual experience is from the Holy Spirit.
But here is the good news:
God has already given you everything you need to discern what is from Him.
Through His Word, and through His Spirit,
you can learn to recognize His voice.
How the Enemy Often Works
The enemy is not always obvious.
He does not usually come with fear or darkness at first—
he often comes subtly, through thoughts and suggestions.
Sometimes this can look like:
• Thoughts that sound like your own voice
(“I’m not good enough…” “This isn’t worth it…”)
• Ideas that pull you away from obedience
(avoiding fellowship, delaying what God asked you to do)
• “Spiritual” experiences that do not align with Scripture
(messages, impressions, or guidance that contradict God’s Word (Psychic fortune telling, tarot cards are other examples))
• Distractions that keep you too busy to seek God
This is why Scripture tells us to test—not blindly accept—what we hear and feel.
Guarding Your Mind Without Fear
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 10:5
This does not mean you need to be afraid of every thought.
It means you are no longer a passive listener—you are a steward of what you allow to stay.
When a thought comes, you can ask:
• Does this align with God’s Word?
• Does this lead me toward truth, peace, and obedience?
• Or does this pull me into fear, confusion, or compromise?
If it does not align with truth—
you do not have to accept it.
Understanding the Counterfeit
The enemy’s greatest tactic is not obvious evil—
it is imitation.
Just as counterfeit money looks real,
false guidance can feel right.
Even in Matthew 4:1–11, when Jesus was tempted,
the enemy used Scripture—but twisted it.
This is important:
Not everything that sounds spiritual is from God.
So how did Jesus respond?
He did not argue.
He did not analyze endlessly.
He responded with truth.
“It is written…”
Jesus stood firm because He knew the Word of God.
How You Grow in Discernment
You do not learn God’s voice overnight.
You learn it through relationship.
Jesus said:
“My sheep hear My voice… and they follow Me.” — John 10:27
The more time you spend in His Word,
the more clearly you will recognize:
• What is from Him
• What is not
• And what needs to be rejected
A Foundation to Remember
“The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I came that they may have life…” — John 10:10
God leads you into life.
The enemy pulls you away from it.
So when you are unsure, ask:
Is this leading me into life, truth, and obedience?
Or into confusion, fear, isolation, or compromise?
You Have Authority in Christ—Not Helplessness
“I have given you authority… over all the power of the enemy.” — Luke 10:19
You are not at the mercy of every thought or influence.
In Christ, you have authority to:
• Reject what is not from God
• Stand on truth
• Walk in clarity
Gentle but Important Anchor
You do not need to chase spiritual experiences to hear God.
God is not trying to speak in confusing or hidden ways.
He has already spoken clearly through His Word.
Any voice, thought, or experience that contradicts Scripture
is not from Him—no matter how real it feels.
Go Deeper (Bible Study)
If you want to grow in discernment, spend time in these passages:
• James 4:7
What are the steps God gives for resisting the enemy?
(Hint: it begins with surrender)
• Ephesians 6:10–18
What is the armor of God, and how does each piece protect you?
• Genesis 3:1–5
What was the enemy’s strategy in the beginning?
How do you see the same pattern in thoughts today?
"Did God really say...?" How is that same questions still used today?
Matthew 4:1-11 (Jesus in the Wilderness)
What tactics does the enemy use against Jesus?
How does he twist truth or use scripture incorrectly?
How does Jesus respond each time?
What does this show you about the importance of knowing God's word?
